As part of a series of awareness activities launched by the College of Law, the University Psychological Counseling Unit organized an awareness lecture on Monday, 19 January 2026, entitled “The Legal Status of Drug Users under the Iraqi Law on Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances No. 50 of 2017.” The lecture was delivered by Dr. Manal Mohammed Ahmed, Head of the University Psychological Counseling Unit, and targeted first-year students at the College of Law, within the college’s efforts to strengthen students’ psychological and legal awareness.

The lecture addressed the concept of narcotic substances, their types, and the causes of addiction, as well as the negative psychological and social consequences associated with substance use and its impact on both individuals and society. It also examined the topic from a legal perspective by clarifying the laws and legislation that criminalize narcotics and the penalties imposed under Iraqi law.

In addition, the lecture highlighted methods of treatment and rehabilitation, emphasizing that addiction is a treatable condition through consulting specialized authorities and following appropriate therapeutic programs, alongside the importance of awareness, prevention, and psychological support in reducing this phenomenon within the university environment.
