Assistant Professor Dr. Hassan Saad Al-Diwachi, Assistant Dean of the College of Pharmacy for Scientific Affairs, participated on Monday, August 25, 2025, as a member of the master’s thesis defense committee of graduate student Ayman Fares Faisal Khorsheed. The defense was held in the seminar hall of the College of Pharmacy – University of Mosul.
The thesis was entitled:
“Natural Attenuators of Oxidative Stress from New Mexico Green Chili Seeds: Coumarin-Guided Isolation and Bioprofiling of Its Activity.”
The study aimed to explore New Mexico green chili seeds as an underutilized natural source for the extraction of coumarins using, for the first time, magnetically stirred thermal extraction. The research successfully isolated and characterized four rare compounds, which demonstrated significant antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to blood glucose-lowering effects.
The results concluded that these seeds could be considered a sustainable source of promising therapeutic and nutraceutical compounds for future development. The defense session was attended by a number of faculty members and researchers, and was marked by a productive scientific atmosphere and engaging discussions.
