Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Overview

The Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry was established alongside the College’s foundation in 2020.
Through its modern and accredited curriculum, the Department delivers the fundamental concepts of drugs,
covering the mechanism of pharmacological action, biochemistry, structure-activity relationship (SAR),
and the physicochemical properties of drugs, such as acidity, basicity, absorption, distribution, metabolism,
and excretion (ADME). It also examines how modifications to functional groups in chemical compounds
influence toxicity.

The Department is dedicated to studying chemical substances relevant to pharmacy and medicine and
enhancing student skills in drug design and molecular modeling. This is achieved through specialized
computational programs used to predict biological properties and simulate the interaction (docking)
between small molecules and their biological receptors. Students are equipped with the scientific
knowledge and technical skills for drug discovery and development, encompassing their synthesis, analysis,
structural elucidation, and evaluation of their pharmacological and biological activities, enabling them to
assess drug quality, safety, and efficacy.

The Department places a special focus on the discovery and
development of drugs derived from natural products, including their occurrence, extraction, and
identification. The practical component provides essential laboratory training in the synthesis, isolation,
and characterization of both natural and chemically synthesized pharmaceuticals.
