Based on the directives of the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Osama Ismail Al-Mashhadani, and with direct support from the Dean of the College of Law, Prof. Dr. Zeina Ghanem Al-Obaidi, and in continuation of the movement for scientific research and intellectual development,
The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Law held an enrichment lecture titled “Environmental Pollution in Iraq and Its Impact on Health”, on wednesday, May 7, 2025.
The lecture was delivered by the Head of the Private Law Department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ammar Thamer Al-Banna, and the Head of the Continuing Education Unit, Nadia Ahmed Al-Nuaimi.
The lecture provided a detailed explanation of the concept of environmental pollution, including the introduction of waste, chemicals, and other pollutants into natural environments, which leads to negative changes affecting these environments and the living organisms within them. Pollution may occur in the form of chemical substances or naturally existing pollutants.
The lecturers emphasized that the primary cause of environmental pollution is human activity, through the introduction of foreign substances into the environment. This pollution poses long-term health risks to humans, including the emergence of various diseases such as different types of cancer caused by air, soil, or water pollution. As a result, human health is at risk of chronic illnesses.
The workshop included several discussions from economic and legal perspectives and concluded with several recommendations, including recycling, waste reduction, reducing plastic usage, increasing afforestation and green spaces, along with promoting awareness and environmental education.
