Under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, and based on the directives of the President of the University of Ninevah, Prof. Dr. Osama Al-Mashhadani, with the presence of the presidents of public and private universities in Nineveh Province, Dr. Lubna Khamis, Director of the Research and Development Department at the Ministry, and a distinguished group of academics from the public and private universities of the province—
The University of Ninevah participated on wednesday, June 4, 2025, in the central conference dedicated to the universities of Nineveh Province, both public and private, entitled “The Academic Role in Achieving National Unity and Combating Extremist Ideology.” The conference was hosted by the University of Mosul at the Scientific and Literary Forum.
Attending the conference on behalf of our university were the Assistant President for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Dr. Jaafar Ramadan Mohammed, the Assistant President for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ammar Saadoun Hamed, along with members of the university committee responsible for implementing the strategy to combat violent extremism leading to terrorism.
The conference opened with speeches delivered by the President of the University of Mosul, the Director of the Research and Development Department at the Ministry, and the Director of the UNESCO Chair at the University of Mosul, Prof. Dr. Raqeeb Mohammed. In their speeches, they emphasized the pivotal role of universities and academics in promoting moderate discourse, achieving national unity, and combating extremist ideologies.
The conference included a panel discussion chaired by the Director of the Research and Development Department, with participation from the Dean of the College of Archaeology, the Dean of the College of Political Science, the Dean of the College of Law, the Dean of the College of Islamic Sciences, and the Director of the Peacebuilding Center at the University of Mosul. The session focused on the role of universities in countering extremist ideology, promoting peaceful societal coexistence, and reinforcing the values of citizenship and belonging among all members of society.
The conference concluded with several key recommendations, including:
• Supporting and empowering youth intellectually and improving their economic conditions.
• Enhancing the role of media and religious leaders in countering extremist ideologies and promoting messages that foster peaceful coexistence and national unity.
• Organizing awareness workshops and training courses for students at the level of educational directorates and universities to protect society’s youth and build a conscious generation equipped with knowledge and science, thereby achieving societal peace and rejecting hate speech in all its forms.
