A master’s thesis defense was held at the University of Ninevah / College of Electronics Engineering / Department of Computer and Informatics Engineering on Thursday, June 19, 2025. The thesis, presented by Miss Zahraa Ahmed Zuheir, is titled:
“Approximate Computing for Lightweight ARM Processors”
The session was attended by the Dean of the College of Electronics Engineering, Prof. Dr. Khalid Khalil Mohammed, along with a group of postgraduate students.
The thesis addressed approximate computing as one of the modern trends in designing energy-efficient electronic systems. This is achieved by reducing computational complexity in digital processing components, particularly in lightweight RISC processors used in embedded systems.
The study aimed to design customized approximate digital compressors and multipliers, evaluate their performance in terms of power consumption, area, and speed, and then integrate them into a RISC processor to enhance overall efficiency while maintaining acceptable accuracy for use in image processing and intelligent embedded system applications.
The findings of the research demonstrated the potential to improve processor efficiency through the use of customized approximate components, achieving an optimal balance between performance and resource consumption in applications that do not require high computational accuracy.
The examination committee consisted of the following members:
1. Prof. Dr. Shifaa Abdulrahman Dawood / University of Mosul / College of Engineering – Chair.
2. Asst. Prof. Dr. Sidqi Bakr Thanoon / University of Ninevah / College of Electronics Engineering – Member.
