In accordance with the directives of the President of the University of Nineveh, Prof. Dr. Osama Ismail Al-Mashhadani, and with the support of the Dean of the College of Law, Prof. Dr. Zeina Ghanem Al-Obaidi, and within the framework of academic cooperation between the Universities of Mosul and Nineveh,
The Scientific Affairs Unit at the College of Law, University of Nineveh, organized a specialized workshop on Sunday, June 29, 2025, entitled:
“An Introduction to Academic Publishing in Reputable International Indexes.”
The lecture was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Aws Yahya Kashmoula from the University of Mosul, Department of Scholarships and Cultural Relations – German Corner Unit.
The workshop was held on the sidelines of the college’s First Student Conference and aimed to raise researchers’ awareness about the importance of academic publishing in global databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. It explained the distinctions between publishers (e.g., Elsevier, Clarivate), databases (e.g., Scopus, Web of Science), and platforms (e.g., ScienceDirect), as well as the differences between publishing types (traditional, open access, and hybrid).
The session also covered how to distinguish between indexed, predatory, and ranked journals (Q1–Q4).
The workshop shed light on essential digital tools for modern researchers, such as ORCID, DOI, and Publons, explaining how they can be used to verify scientific identity and document publications and peer reviews.
A portion of the session was devoted to discussing publishing in legal disciplines, highlighting methodological differences between local publishing and international English-language publishing in line with the standards of reputable indexes.
The workshop witnessed strong engagement from the attendees. The Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Zeina Ghanem Al-Obaidi, attended part of the session and expressed keen interest in the topic. She raised a direct question about the possibility of having the college’s journal, Nineveh Journal for Legal Studies, included in international databases—a question that led to an in-depth discussion on the requirements and criteria for international indexing.
The workshop concluded with key recommendations, including:
• The need to intensify such awareness-raising scientific activities,
• Encouraging faculty members and postgraduate students to actively pursue global academic publishing pathways,
• And serious efforts to qualify the college’s journal for inclusion in internationally recognized databases, thus enhancing the institution’s academic and scientific standing.
At the end of the session, Prof. Dr. Al-Obaidi presented a certificate of appreciation to Mr. Aws Yahya Kashmoula in recognition of his valuable contribution, wishing him continued success and excellence.
