In line with the directives of the University Presidency and under the direct supervision of Prof. Dr. Osama Ismail Al-Mashhadani, President of the University, and as part of the university’s commitment to its social responsibility and its active role in building health and educational awareness among youth, the Central Committee for Community Service launched a broad awareness campaign on the risks of digital addiction.
This initiative comes within the framework of the Global Adolescent Health Week, held annually from October 13 to 19, coinciding with the beginning of the new academic year.
The campaign was organized in cooperation with the Nineveh Directorate of Education, covering a number of schools across the province. It targeted intermediate and secondary school students, as they represent the age group most affected by modern digital technologies.
The campaign was carried out by specialized members of the Central Committee for Community Service:
1. Asst. Prof. Dr. Khalid Ibrahim Mohammed
2. Dr. Dhalal Ahmed Thiyab, Consultant in Family Medicine
3. Lecturer Maha Riyadh, Specialist in Educational Psychology
The campaign activities included engaging scientific lectures addressing the psychological, health, and behavioral dimensions of digital addiction. Additionally, attractive awareness posters were distributed, designed specifically to appeal to the target audience. Open discussion sessions were also held with students and school counselors to better understand the daily challenges adolescents face when dealing with smart devices, digital games, and social media platforms.
The academic team provided a set of practical educational and scientific solutions to help students achieve digital balance, enhance their self-awareness and time management skills, and promote positive and purposeful technology use that supports their academic success and psychological and social development.
At a time when the digital world is rapidly evolving and its influence intertwines with every aspect of adolescent life, such awareness campaigns emerge as a vital necessity and national priority — placing science and academic expertise at the service of shaping the awareness of the new generation. While this initiative has lit a candle along the paths of awareness, its glow will continue to shine in students’ minds, reminding them that the future is not built on screens alone, but on understanding, choice, and balance — in a world that never stops connecting.
This activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
• Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being
• Goal 4: Quality Education
• Goal 5: Gender Equality
• Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
