The College of Nursing Lights Up Pink October with an Inspiring Awareness Seminar on Early Detection of Breast Cancer

Under the guidance of the President of the University of Ninevah, Professor Dr. Osama Ismail Al-Mashhadani, and the supervision of the Dean of the College of Nursing, Professor Dr. Radwan Hussein Ibrahim, and stemming from its humanitarian and educational mission and its deep belief that health awareness is the cornerstone of building a healthy society—
the College of Nursing at the University of Ninevah organized an exceptional awareness seminar titled:
“Periodic Screening for Cancerous Diseases – Pink October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month,”
as part of the activities of the Women’s Affairs Unit in the college.

This seminar embodied the pioneering role of the College of Nursing in spreading health awareness among all segments of society and highlighting the importance of early detection as the first line of defense against breast cancer.

The seminar featured scientific and educational lectures delivered by a distinguished group of female academics:
• Prof. Dr. Salwa Hazem Al-Mukhtar – University of Mosul, College of Nursing
• Dr. Dalia Muzafar Abdulrahman – University of Nineveh, College of Medicine
• Dr. Rafah Raad Abdulsalam – University of Ninevah, College of Nursing
• Specialized University Nurse Sarah Younis Thanon – Ninevah Health Directorate, Oncology Hospital

The lectures covered rich scientific topics, including the anatomy of the breast, natural physiological changes, the most common diseases, and factors that may increase the risk of developing breast cancer. They also emphasized self-examination methods and their crucial role in early detection, which shortens the treatment process, increases the chances of full recovery, and helps preserve the breast without surgical removal.

The seminar was not limited to the scientific aspect; it also carried deeply human moments, as several breast cancer survivors shared their inspiring stories with the attendees. They spoke with courage and determination about their treatment journeys and how psychological, family, and medical support served as the cornerstone in overcoming the disease.
Their words were filled with hope and strength, affirming that breast cancer is not the end of the road but the beginning of a new life full of faith and resilience—leaving a profound emotional impact on everyone present.

The speakers also stressed the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, and avoiding stress and harmful habits, as these play a vital role in preventing cancerous diseases.

At the end of the event, the Women’s Affairs Unit expressed its gratitude for the great support provided by the College of Nursing’s Deanery for its awareness activities, affirming that such initiatives reflect the college’s message of serving humanity before the profession, and spreading awareness before treatment.
Thus, the College of Nursing at the University of Ninevah continues to shine as a beacon of science and humanity in the fields of health and community care.
