A new critical book has recently been published by Dr. Omar Mohammed Abdullah Al-Obaidi, a faculty member at the Secretariat of the University of Ninevah Council, entitled “Poetic Discourse in the Works of Bushra Al-Bustani: A Study in the Light of the Semiotics of Passions”, issued by Noon Publishing and Distribution House. The book is a critical study that seeks to approach passions textually in light of the semiotic and cognitive theories of Algirdas Julien Greimas and Jacques Fontanille, particularly as presented in their well-known work “The Semiotics of Passions: From States of Things to States of the Soul.”
The book examines the application of the procedural tools of the semiotics of passions in revealing the specificity of feminine poetic discourse and clarifying its visionary sensitivity, through deconstructing the implicit textual codes that pave the way for what is left unsaid within the depths of identity. It adopts two methodological paths in analyzing poetic texts: the generative path and the analytical path, which enhances the understanding of the semantic and discursive structure of poetic discourse and reveals its aesthetic and identity-related effectiveness, as well as its capacity to persuade, astonish, and influence the reader.
This scholarly contribution comes within the framework of the research and critical output of the faculty members of the University of Ninevah, and their efforts to enrich the Arabic library with contemporary critical studies that engage with modern theoretical approaches.
