Dr. Baraa Basil Ramadan, a faculty member at the College of Pharmacy, University of Ninevah, has earned a PhD in Life Sciences from the College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Mosul, for her doctoral dissertation entitled:
“An Experimental Study to Evaluate the Efficacy of Essential Oils and Omani Frankincense Tree Gum (Boswellia sacra) Against the Parasite Causing Cystic Echinococcosis in Mice.”
The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of extracts and oils derived from Omani frankincense in combating Echinococcus granulosus, the parasite responsible for cystic echinococcosis, through in vitro and in vivo experiments, and to compare their efficacy with that of albendazole.
The study results demonstrated high efficacy of the plant extracts, with some treatments producing promising results in eliminating protoscoleces. They also contributed to reducing the number and size of hydatid cysts, enhancing the immune response, and limiting pathological changes in the laboratory animals.
The dissertation was supervised by Prof. Dr. Luay Jameel Rashan of Dhofar University and the Research Center in the Sultanate of Oman, and Prof. Dr. Asmaa Abdulaziz Ali of the University of Mosul.
