As part of the activities of the Continuing Education Unit, and in collaboration with the Women’s Affairs Unit,
the Deanery of the College of Pharmacy organized a valuable scientific lecture on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, entitled:
“Laboratory Evaluation of Insulin Resistance and Its Relationship to Type 2 Diabetes: A Special Focus on Its Role in Women.”
The event was held in the college’s main hall and attended by the assistant deans and faculty members.
The lecture was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Khairiya Abdul Rahman, who discussed the various types and causes of diabetes, with a special emphasis on Gestational Diabetes due to its significance and impact on women’s health. She provided a detailed explanation of the concept of insulin resistance, methods of measurement, and the noticeable global increase in its prevalence.
The lecture also covered the latest technologies used in glucose level monitoring, with a focus on the concept of Mean Amplitude of Glycemic Excursions (MAGE)—a critical factor in assessing blood sugar control quality and predicting chronic diabetic complications. She pointed out that measuring MAGE requires specialized devices not available in conventional laboratories, underscoring the need for continuous advancement in this field.
This lecture is part of a series of scientific activities through which the college aims to stay updated with the latest developments in pharmaceutical and medical sciences and to enhance health awareness among academic staff, students, and the wider community.
