Lecturer Dr. Alaa Sabah Saleh, a faculty member in the Scientific Affairs Department at the University of Ninevah, participated as a member of the examination committee for a Master’s thesis defense held at the Department of Geology and Petroleum Sciences, College of Science, University of Mosul, on Monday, August 24, 2026.
Researcher Ghadaq Khairi Abdul Razzaq Abdul Rahim Al-Brawi defended her thesis entitled:
“Biostratigraphy of Calcareous Nannofossils of the Shiranish Formation in Well (AZ_29), Northwestern Iraq.”
The study focused on the classification of calcareous nannofossils from the Shiranish Formation in the Ain Zalah Oil Field, northwestern Iraq, identifying their biostratigraphic zones and comparing them with global zonations to determine the geological age of the formation, as well as reconstructing the paleoclimate prevailing during its deposition.
The study identified 52 species belonging to 25 genera and 13 families of calcareous nannofossils. It also identified four biostratigraphic zones and determined the stratigraphic age of the studied section, extending from the end of the Early Campanian to the end of the Late Campanian, under climatic conditions ranging from tropical to subtropical.
The participation of University of Ninevah faculty members in thesis defense committees at various Iraqi universities reflects the University’s academic presence and the contribution of its teaching staff to supporting scientific research and strengthening academic cooperation among higher education institutions.
