The Assistant Dean of the College of Information Technology for Scientific Affairs chaired a committee to discuss a master’s student in the College of Engineering at the Northern Technical University.

As part of the scientific cooperation between Nineveh University and the Northern Technical University, under the direct supervision and support of the President of Nineveh University, Dr. Osama Al-Mashhadani.

Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Othman Mohammed, Assistant Dean of the College of Information Technology for Scientific Affairs, chaired a committee to discuss a master’s student in the College of Engineering at the Northern Technical University with his thesis entitled “Detection of Melanoma Skin Cancer using Support Vector Machine and Raspberry Pi 4”.

The thesis aimed to provide two consecutive diagnostic systems using Computer Aided Diagnosis for rapid detection of skin cancer, helping dermatologists determine whether a case requires a biopsy or not.

In the first system, image processing was used to enhance and extract interesting features for describing and classifying images of skin lesions into melanoma or non-melanoma in MATLAB. In the second system, all techniques used in the first system were converted to Python, including image processing and feature extraction, and an SVM model was used for training and predicting test data results. The system was designed on a Raspberry Pi 4 platform to create an independent system for diagnosing melanoma skin cancer.

The thesis concluded important findings, including the possibility of manufacturing a device that quickly diagnoses skin cancer.

At the end of the discussion, the Dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Majed Al-Kilou, presented a certificate of appreciation to the committee chairman, expressing deep gratitude for the scientific cooperation between Nineveh University and the Northern Technical University.
